- A. PLATFORMS AND OPERATING SYSTEM VERSIONS SUPPORTED
- =====================================================
-
- Diskeeper Home Edition is supported on Intel x86 (or compatible)
- platforms running Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows ME, and Windows
- XP Home and Media Center Editions.
-
- Note that different editions of Diskeeper support different
- ranges of the Windows operating systems. See the Table of
- Supported Operating Systems for a chart of the different
- Diskeeper editions and the Windows versions each supports.
-
-
- B. OVERVIEW OF DISKEEPER 8.0
- =============================
-
- Throughout its history, Diskeeper has improved with each new
- version. Diskeeper Home Edition sets the standard in simplified
- disk defragmentation with innovative new features and approaches
- to solving fragmentation problems for home users.
-
- From its trademark "Set It and Forget It" scheduling to the
- comprehensive performance and reliability analysis, Diskeeper
- Home Edition is designed to solve your disk fragmentation problems
- permanently, and keep you informed about the condition of all your
- disks.
-
- Diskeeper Home Edition is only one member of the comprehensive
- Diskeeper family of defragmentation products. There are different
- editions for everyone, from home users to huge enterprise IT
- departments.
-
- The Diskeeper lineup also includes:
-
- o Diskeeper Professional Edition
- o Diskeeper Server Standard Edition
- o Diskeeper Server Web Edition
- o Diskeeper Server Enterprise Edition
- o Diskeeper Server Datacenter Edition
- o Diskeeper Administrator Edition
-
- See the Table of Supported Operating Systems at the end of this
- Readme file for a chart of the different Diskeeper editions and
- the Windows versions each supports.
-
- The following list summarizes the most important
- Diskeeper features:
-
- o Wide Array of Diskeeper Editions-
- Starting with version 8.0, the Diskeeper family of products
- has been expanded to offer specialized defragmentation of
- Windows operating systems ranging from Windows 95 through
- Windows Server 2003 Datacenter Edition. See the Table of
- Diskeeper Editions in the Diskeeper Help for the complete
- product lineup.
-
- o New Descriptive Interface-
- The Diskeeper interface has been completely re-designed to
- be more intuitive and informative. Common commands are grouped
- together in the Command pane, and a group of tabbed panes show
- you a wide variety of information. Diskeeper shows you the
- condition of your disks, and provides suggestions for improving
- or maintaining your disks.
-
- o Performance and Reliability Analysis-
- Diskeeper now collects and displays data regarding the
- performance and reliability of your disk volumes. This
- information allows you to be more proactive in the
- management and maintenance of your computers.
-
- It should be noted that the first performance analysis is based
- on pre-determined disk performance values measured as a part of
- disk performance research done by Executive Software. To get a
- more accurate performance measurement of your actual disks,
- Diskeeper must scan your drives to measure their performance.
- Since this measurement can briefly slow down your computer,
- this scan operation is disabled by default, but you can turn
- it on easily. The "Set performance data options" option is
- described in the Diskeeper help system.
-
- o Set It and Forget It Operation-
- Diskeeper is designed to operate without your intervention.
- Set a schedule for the times you want Diskeeper to run, then
- sit back and let Diskeeper take care of your disk fragmentation.
- Of course, you can also run Diskeeper manually.
-
- o Smart Scheduling-
- This feature allows Diskeeper to automatically determine the
- optimum defragmentation schedule for each disk volume
- individually, and adjust that schedule as disk usage changes.
- Diskeeper Home Edition automatically sets up Smart Scheduling
- for all your disk drives when it is installed.
-
- o Exclusion Lists-
- Diskeeper exclusion lists allow you to specify files and
- directories that will not be allowed to be processed by
- Diskeeper.
-
- o Event Logging-
- Diskeeper can record information about its activity in a log
- file. A wide variety of information can be saved for future
- reference.
-
-
- C. KNOWN RESTRICTIONS IN THIS RELEASE
- ======================================
-
- 1. Diskeeper needs access to the root directory on a volume to
- display the volume in the GUI. Diskeeper runs under the
- SYSTEM logon, so if an NTFS volume is not appearing in the
- volume list, make sure that SYSTEM has FULL CONTROL on the
- root directory of the volume.
-
- 2. Diskeeper needs to be able to access a file to defragment it.
-
- a) If a file on an NTFS volume does not grant FULL CONTROL to
- the SYSTEM logon, Diskeeper will not be able to defragment
- it.
-
- b) If a file on an NTFS volume is open for update with an
- exclusive lock, Diskeeper will not be able to defragment
- it. You will need to shut down the application that has
- a file open in this mode in order to defragment it.
-
- 3. If User Profiles are enabled on Windows 95/98/Me systems,
- Diskeeper will only be available under the logon of the user
- who installed it. If you are using multiple user profiles,
- you can install Diskeeper from within each profile to make it
- available to that profile.
-
- 4. Although Diskeeper attempts to lock removable drives, some
- may not be lockable, or may eject anyway if the eject button
- is used. Data corruption may occur if you eject a removable
- disk while defragmentation is occurring on that disk.
-
- 5. If you are running Internet Explorer 4.0 and using Dial Up
- Networking (DUN) with a modem, starting Diskeeper can cause
- the DUN dialog box to be displayed. To work around this,
- disable connecting through a modem or install Internet
- Explorer 5.0. Internet Explorer 5.0 may show similar results
- if the "Always dial my default connection" option is set via
- the Tools | Internet options | Connection tab set.
-
- 6. If you install other software that also loads the MMC, be
- aware that the other product may install an older version of
- the MMC. If this occurs, Diskeeper may not operate correctly,
- and should be reinstalled.
-
- 7. FAT volumes larger than 2GB formatted on Windows NT cannot be
- defragmented under Windows 95/98/Me. This is due to a 2GB FAT
- volume limit on Windows 95/98/Me systems.
-
- 8. The free space figures displayed in the Diskeeper MMC snap-in
- may not match those shown in the Diskeeper report view if
- you are running Norton Protect.
-
- 9. When the post-defragmentation summary report is displayed,
- scheduled "Set It and Forget It" defragmentation jobs are
- prevented from starting. Close the summary report to allow
- the scheduled defragmentation to occur.
-
- 10. On Windows 95, if you do not have Internet Explorer 3.0 or
- higher installed, you will not be able to access the Diskeeper
- Help system interactively from Diskeeper. However, you can
- still run the Diskeeper Help by double-clicking the
- Diskeeper.chm file in the directory folder where Diskeeper
- was installed.
-
- 11. In rare cases, the Diskeeper installation will not be able
- to uninstall a previous version of the Diskeeper service.
- The error displayed is "Error stopping the Diskeeper
- Service." If you receive this error, use Control Panel,
- Add/Remove Programs to uninstall the previous version of
- Diskeeper. This will enable you to resume the installation.
-
- 12. On Windows 95/98/Me, pressing CTRL+ALT+DEL while the
- Diskeeper engine is running on the system drive, can cause
- a "system busy" blue screen. Pressing any key should return
- you to Windows. If CTRL+ALT+DEL is pressed twice, while any
- disk volume is being defragmented, this can prevent old file
- fragments that were moved from being freed up. To avoid this
- problem, press the space bar after the first CTRL+ALT+DEL to
- return to Windows, then stop any defragmentation before
- shutting down your computer.
-
- 13. The Status Bar at the bottom of the Diskeeper display does
- not appear on systems running versions of Internet Explorer
- lower than 5.0. Although this is due to limitations in the
- Microsoft Management Console (MMC), we are investigating a
- solution.
-
-
- D. KNOWN INCOMPATIBILITIES
- ===========================
-
- 1. Diskeeper will not run on disk volumes that are locked by
- utilities such as Scandisk.
-
- 2. We have noted occasional problems in defragmenting volumes
- that have been configured or resized with Partition Magic.
- If you are having problems defragmenting a volume, and it
- has previously been configured or resized with Partition
- Magic, it may be necessary to backup, reformat, and restore
- the volume prior to running Diskeeper.
-
- 3. When using an IOMEGA JAZ drive with the IOMEGA Quick.exe
- application installed, you may receive the following blue
- screen error message when you log on to the computer using
- an administrative account:
-
- Stop 0x0000000A (parameter,parameter,parameter,parameter)
- IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL.
-
- The IOMEGA Quick.exe application is installed in the Startup
- group to start automatically. It sends invalid system calls
- that are only allowed when logged on as an administrator.
- When the Diskeeper Boot-Time operation is run, the Quick.exe
- application is delayed in starting, thus causing the above
- problem.
-
- 4. Diskeeper is compatible with Roxio GoBack. Note, however, that
- you should add the "gobackio.bin" file to the Diskeeper
- exclusion list. After doing so, should be no problems
- running GoBack along with Diskeeper.
-
-
- E. INSTALLING DISKEEPER
- ========================
-
- Note: On Windows XP, make sure you are logged onto an account
- that is a member of the Administrators group.
-
- Diskeeper is available either as a downloaded self-extracting
- compressed file, or on CD-ROM. The following instructions
- apply to both formats.
-
- Follow these steps to install Diskeeper:
-
- The Diskeeper installation is typically fast and simple.
- Here are the basic steps:
-
- 1. Insert the Diskeeper CD-ROM into the appropriate drive on
- your computer. (If you are installing from a downloaded file,
- double-click the file you downloaded.)
-
- 2. Follow the screens displayed, answering the questions asked as
- prompted.
-
- For more details about installing Diskeeper, see the "Diskeeper
- Installation" chapter in the Diskeeper User Manual.
-
-
- F. SETTING ACCESS CONTROL ON WINDOWS 95/98/Me SYSTEMS
- ======================================================
-
- In some cases, the Diskeeper setup program will inform you
- that it is necessary for you to change the access control
- settings on Windows 95/98 systems. If such a message is
- displayed during the installation, follow these steps to
- set the access control:
-
- 1. From the Windows Control Panel, double-click "Network".
-
- 2. Click the Access Control tab.
-
- 3. Enable "User-level access control".
-
- 4. Specify the correct domain, if necessary.
-
-
- G. UNINSTALLING DISKEEPER
- ==========================
-
- To uninstall Diskeeper on Windows XP systems, you must be logged
- into an account that is a member of the Administrators group.
-
- Note that the controls may have slightly different names,
- depending on your version of Windows.
-
- Follow these steps to completely remove
- and uninstall Diskeeper from your computer:
-
- 1. From Control Panel, double click "Add/Remove Programs". (On
- Windows 95/98/Me systems, click the Install/Uninstall tab.)
-
- 2. Highlight the Diskeeper entry.
-
- 4. Click Remove or Add/Remove (Windows 95/98/Me). This removes
- the Diskeeper program files from your computer. In most cases,
- the Diskeeper installation directory will not be removed.
-
- 5. On Windows XP, systems, the Windows Disk Defragmenter is
- restored to the state it was in before Diskeeper was
- installed.
-
- 6. Manually delete the Diskeeper installation directory if it
- exists.
-
- Note: If the MMC and DCOM have been installed on your
- computer, they will not be removed when Diskeeper is
- uninstalled.
